knew that. glad you could get up early with us in our stretchy pants. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the rain continues to fall in parts the bay area. where's that storm now? >> right now, it's draped across santa cruz. the front will move out as we head through the next couple of hours. temperatures are comfortable this afternoon. however, if you're trying to make your way out the front door, even northern california, you are going to encounter slick conditions. we still have some wet roadways here in the bay area. monitoring this little pocket of rainfall just to the north of sunnyvale. we have rainfall up and down the shore. these showers are clear. we should be mostly clear by about 8:00 a.m. this morning. and then by about noon, beautiful sunny weather. your full forecast is in a few moments. he's always important, but especially today.

>> thank you. we're looking to the bay bridge. the overnight rainy conditions with a lot of puddling. here's the toll plaza. the maps show you the maze and the approach. a concern now, the earlier accident i told you, east 580, right around greenville. well, it's now a sig alert. a jackknifed big rig. no details on injuries. three out of four lanes blocked. countercommute through that wet area where the rain just traveled as well. and in your commute, another accident right around north livermore. wet roads throughout. we're tracking all these areas. >> keeping it on the roads. we suggest you pack a little extra patience. millions of people planning to travel for that thanksgiving holiday and most of them will be

driving. he's in the south bay this morning. how many people are estimated to be out? >> good morning, jon. we're heading north here. aaa is predicting there will be more californians hitting the road, traveling overall this holiday thanksgiving weekend compared to last year. this is a trend that we've been seeing for the past four thanksgiving weekends. this will be the fourth one in a row where we are seeing an increase. aaa anticipates almost 5 million californians will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. that's about a half percent increase from last year. of that number, from the majority, 4.7 will be hitting the road and traveling by car. now, if you're wondering, boy, how much is that going to cost me, fortunately, the prices are down, enough to make it more affordable. taking a look at the overnight

numbers from aaa. you can see san jose, oakland, the 370 range. san francisco, averaging $3.86. compare that to a month ago and you are looking at a decrease of roughly 70 cents. still expensive. compared to last thanksgiving, these prices are about the same. if you are driving out of town via 580, a main connector, there has been a lot of traffic in livermore at the altoro exit as shoppers head to the new outlet mall. might not be the biggest deal today as shoppers hold off for black friday but it could be an issue tomorrow night. and of course on friday, that's when the mall will be onlying. the mall actually opens tomorrow night. it will be open throughout friday. 580 could be particularly bad

because of the new outlet mall. reporting live for "told in the bay." not only are there travelers all over country talking to those airports, bay area no exception. travelers are experiencing some delays already, right? >> yeah, just a couple of delays. we're really starting to see traffic pick up at the airport. a lot of flights. what a day to be traveling. we've got rain, we've got crowds. many travers say they'll beat the crowd with an extremely early departure. so they are arriving very early and some of them even had time to catch a nap inside terminal 2 this morning. we know of course thanksgiving is a busy travel time. at fso, they're expecting a record passenger load. expecting 3% more passengers

this year. i spoke with one man who arrived way too early for his flight but he decided to just go for it. why are you here so early? >> i set my alarm too early and didn't realize till i got here. i'm going to las vegas. i'm from las vegas. i've just been up here for work. >> how do you expect this day to be? >> hopefully uneventful. been crossing my fingers. who knows though. >> so the security lines are pretty steady this morning. the gates didn't open till 4:30 but travelers were ready. yesterday, delays were anywhere from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. not seeing that this morning yet. i did check the arrival and departure board. saw two delays coming in to fso from the east coast. one from florida and one from boston. certainly something to keep in mind. and that could change -- delays could get longer as the day goes on. reporting live at fso, christy

smith, "today in the bay." an overnight explosion on a bus in downtown tel aviv sending several people to the hospital. right now, threatening to derail an already shaky cease-fire between israel and hamas. "today in the bay's" live in the newsroom with details. >> that bus blast in israel just latest scene of violence between the israelis and hamas. we can show you the aftermath. the window's completely blown out and chaos in the streets of tel aviv where the explosion happened. right near the nation's military headquarters. almost 20 people were hurt. 2 seriously. no one has outright claimed responsibility for the blast. but officials report cheering and praise could be heard in gaza where blasts like this -- we want you to hear this, what's happening overnight, common place. [ shelling ] hard to believe this is really happening while we are asleep. overnight, israeli rocket

firepower pounding gaza with at least 30 strikes overnight, proving anything but a cease-fire has been reached. the work of hillary clinton, secretary of state, continues this morning. she met with israeli prime minister netanyahu. this is part of her message to him. >> the goal must be a durable outcome that promotes regional stability and advances the security and legitimate aspirations of israelis and palestinians alike. >> this morning, more meetings. secretary clinton meeting with palestinian president mahmoud abbas. also traveling to cairo to meet with top officials there who have the power to negotiate with hamas hamas. the death toll is 130 palestinians killed compared to just five israelis. >> it's 5:08. san francisco sheriff deputies back on the job after being accused of pulling a gun during a heated argument. prosecutors say meteconi green got into a confrontation with her sister's neighbor last month

over a dispute on unpaid money. green allegedly pulled a gun after the neighbor -- golf clubs. she faces six misdemeanor counts. prosecutors say it could be resolveled at a hearing next month. this morning, the man accused of burglaring steve jobs palo alto home is expected to be in court. he was arrested in august but his hearing has been delayed multiple times. he's yet to enter a plea. investigators say mcfarland confessed to using a spare key found at the waverly street property, which was under construction at the tyime, to steal jewelry. we've got meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. thank you for waking up with us. we'll be here tomorrow as well. even though it's thanksgiving. temperatures are mild out there. we're close to 60 degrees just about everywhere.

want to show you where the front currently is draped across the bay area. mostly impacting the south end of the bay area. showers starting to really subside up in the north bay. you will see the sunshine first there as we head through the next couple hours. doppler rad da we stop it for you currently showers kind of surrounding san jose it not a lot heavy rain here. but from freemont to mountain view you will find slick conditions. and it has been raining overnight. so give yourself plenty of extra time. the front continues to clear out of here. when we meet back here for our midday show, still tracking a few showers. probably still tracking some flight delays at that point. the showers will be coming to a close. and then the wake-up on thanksgiving morn, it's going to be really comfortable. lots of sunshine at 8:00 a.m. black friday, yeah, starts on thursday. 8:00 p.m. 60 degrees. walmart, sears, kmart, toys "r" us, open. make sure you bring your coat but no rain to worry about. and then of course, 9:00 p.m.

it is the last full day of trading this week. scott mcgrew says the last full day for investors -- hewlett-packard stock. >> the latest implosion. the palo alto company shares fell 12% tuesday in very active trading to close at lows we haven't seen in a decade. this, a day after ceo meg whitman says hewlett-packard had

been tricked when it bought british company autonomy last year. hp alleges autonomy lied about its financials. a charge one of the former officers at autonomy denies. a disaster big enough that in any other company it probably would have forced the ceo to step down. at hp, that's about the last thing the company needs. because ceos getting fired or stepping down is one of its biggest problems. laura mentioned a shortened trading week. no trading tomorrow because of thanksgiving. let's get a preholiday check from reporter live at cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> very good morning to you. stocks weakened after the fed chairman said the fed doesn't have tools available to offset the impact of the economy going over the fiscal cliff. the dow took a hit from hewlett which fell to a low after announcing it took a nearly $9 billion loss due to accounting issues. we do get data out today on

unemployment, manufacturing and consumer sentiment. the dow slipping about seven points s points. the nasdaq inched up in yesterday's trade. hostess brand is moving forward with plans to go out of business after last-minute talks with striking workers failed. the two sides were pressed into mediation by a bankruptcy judge in an effort to save more than 18,000 jobs. a court hearing resumes today in new york. hostess which makes twinkies will ask the judge to approve a plan to liquidate the 82-year-old company. back to you. >> all right, have a great thanksgiving. it may be a few days for john mcafee. he is a person of interest in the murder of his neighbor in his adopted home of belize. he said he's run into some kind of trouble, doesn't say what, and he has to move, he says, to a new location. he doesn't actually update the blog itself. he phones it in to someone who then does that. but, again, he's saying he's

going to be silent for a couple of days while he concentrates rounding from the police -- >> sounds like he's run into a lot of trouble actually. scott, thank you very much. it is 5:17 now. superstorm sandy causing some new headaches this coming holiday. travelers finding a shortage of rental cars. sandy damaging thousands, including those owned by rental compan companies. the few cars available are being offered with a very steep price. rail companies driving thousands of cars from across the country, just trying to help there and ease up the demand. take years to recover from that. >> a little bit rain in our neck of the woods. we get it. remember, earthquakes, we don't get any warning. it's always a good idea. especially as you get your thanksgiving fixings ready. maybe grab some canned goods and

water. it's always a good idea to be in disaster mode even though it's hard to predict any sort of activity. we've got a good looking day shaping up. the showers are coming through. clearing out our air quality. it's not as cold as you would think it could be. with all this rain coming down. even the rain cooled air is not even dropping your temperatures into the 40s. we're into the 50s and 60s this morning. we're going to climb close to 70 degrees. as we head through our holiday weekend. it all works out like this. showers around the east shore. peninsula getting a break now. same for the north bay. that's going to continue as we head throughout the next couple of hours. you do want to keep in mind winds will pick up once that front pulls out here. we usually see the most instability ahead of the front. that will be the case. look at your temperatures. 59 degrees in san francisco to start. you're at 54 in gill roy. 59 in san jose. 59 degrees to start you out in sunnyvale. we're expecting those low

ceilings in san francisco to cause maybe 1 to 2 hour delays out of sfo. as you know, the airports are hustling and bustling. already at capacity when it comes to the flight. keep this in mind. 50 minute delays expected out of oakland. maybe a 30-minute delay for the next two hours out of san jose with those showers still around. also probably going to take you about 5 to 10 minutes longer with wet weather. we'll check on the actual details in just a moment. 66 degrees down in gilroy. so you want to make those plans for the weekend? we are looking good for you and your family. even your friends who might be coming into town. 69 degrees by friday. sunny for your shopping. and then saturday into sunday, some spectacular weather on the way. hopefully you have those two days off because it's going to be nice around here, mike. i know you've got family ready to celebrate with. >> very ready. they don't sleep very well right now. very excited this time of the year. we're looking over here to the peninsula. this green we've colored in all

over. pretty much most of the bay area. that's wet roadway conditions. slick local roads as well as the on and off ramps. reports of an accident southbound 101. that's why we've marked them both in the area. there may be two accidents going on blocking at least a couple of lanes. the one i have the most detail on is the pickup truck just on its roof. some minor cuts but the driver is walking around. that's presenting a big distraction and a problem as you're heading south toward 92. across the bay, we're looking at the sig alert. eastbound 580 right around greenville, reports three out of the four lanes blocked by a jackknifed big rig. not a lot detail about injuries. it sounds like it's mostly they have to unhook these vehicles and clear them from the roadway. then westbound, you have some slowing coming in through livermore. heading down toward pleasanton. that i've marked with the

arrows. lighter volume expected today though. soupy conditions as well. we'll track that coming up. >> soupy and refreshing. 5:21 now. coming up, plans to let homeless people camp out in parts of the bay area. >> plus, see if you're one of the millions americans hitting the road for thanksgiving weekend. pack that patience. long lines of people are trying to reach the terminal at lax. we'll show you what you can expect at a number of different cities across the country starting with the dallas-ft. worth area. >> i'm ben russell in dallas-ft. worth international airport. one of the busiest travel periods of the entire year is off and running. they expect more than 2 million people to pass through the doors of this airport. already, one of the five busiest in the entire world. if you're heading here, we're just passing through it y, and can expect clear skies and temperatures in the 60s so no need for a heavy overcoat.

palo alto leaders looking at new ways to help the homeless. considering a proposal to allow businesses, churches and city lots to provide space for people who live in their cars. under the six-month trial program, up to three vehicles will be allowed at each location. the issue is pushed to the spotlight after homeowners complained about sanitation issues on those who camp out in their cars in their neighborhood. some hospitals on strike for

a second day, demanding a new contract with sutter health. 3300 nurses and technicians walking off the job yesterday at hospitals from oakland to castro valley. at issue, salary increases, sick days and requiring nurses to pay for their own health care. all the hospitals have hired replacement nurses during this strike. >> want to check the forecast now. meteorologist christina loren. >> we've got rain on the radar. a lot of people trying to get out of town. let's help you with your travel plans. the threat is over san jose, getting most of the moisture. the east shore still getting some light showers. now we're expecting the winds to pick up. the fog to roll in. so sfo, delays will be likely. we usually get those at about 6:30. we'll tell you whether or not your flight will take off on time this morning. stick with us throughout the morning. let's check on highways right now. busy this morning. >> even though the rain might

on this wednesday, november 21st. this is "today in the bay." it is 5:30. good morning. thank you for joining us. a busy day out there with the rain and the roads. >> our top story this morning is the rain. christina loren tracking that storm for us. >> the last thing you want to hear about on your way out that front door for any duration of time is wet weather. you know what, the good news is, it's not going to last long. this is the tail end of that front. it's already clearing out of here. we still have rainfall coming down across san jose, livermore, even parts of the santa cruz mountains. if you're headed towards the sierra nevada, also, we still have this winter weather advisory in place until 4:00 p.m. above 7,000 feet expecting up to 10 inches of fresh powder. you want to bring those chains

with you, travel cautiously. also expecting some gusty winds here. we'll track your travel and your weather. right now, want to take a look at what's happening with our own highway man. >> the dahmer summit is just above so you do have to watch. the bay bridge, slippery conditions in many spots. the peninsula was just hit with rain. we have two accidents on our map. 101 south. that's causing two lanes to be blocked. avoid the entire area by hitting 280. you see that green highlight, probably still wet roads and conditions here. the sig alert east 580. we're tracking that as well. >> it has become an annual tradition. tomorrow, thanksgiving. today, travelers all over country just rushing airports. today is considered one of the busiest travel days of the year. >> check out this video.

just in from lax. cars leaned up for miles. this is just to get to the terminal. also, there's a lot of traffic around the bay area airports. christy smith actually made it through the crowds. we get the latest on the delays. >> reporter: good moralin inmor. yesterday was a rough travel day. so far so good this morning, much smoother. i can show you the crowds are starting to show up this morning. many travelers getting here as early as possible. so they wouldn't have to fight the crowd so early. they actually had a chance to sleep. thanksgiving always a busy travel time. sfo is expecting record crowds this year of 3% from this time last year. i just spoke with one man who had the good fortune to be heading to belize with his family just to do something a little different. >> it's about what to be

expected. expected to be probably busier later. so luckily we got here early enough. >> how do you pass the time with children? >> you know, handheld electronics, ipods, movies. listen to music. >> reporter: that's what we saw a lot of people doing, sitting there watching movies. yesterday, delays up to 90 minutes and longer. so far, checking the arrival and departure boards. everything looks pretty good. we did see two delays of flights coming from the east coast. of course, that's going to change as the day goes on. now, one of the troubles we had this morning was trying to fight the rain just to get to the airport. the roads awfully wet. for more on how it's looking, i'll turn it over to my colleague. >> reporter: good morning,

christy. we heard christina say we're seeing the rain, like we're seeing right now on southbound i-80 in malpeta. if you wait till late morning, this weather should clear up. there's going to be a lot more people on the road this thanksgiving holiday weekend compared to last year. this is a trend we've seen for the past four holiday weekends. a trend throughout the country. they're anticipating almost 5.5 million californians will travel 50 miles or more. that's about a half percent increase from last year. the majority, 4.7 million, will hit the road and travel by car. gas prices is certainly come down enough to make it more affordable to do so. we look at the overnight numbers from aaa. san jose, oakland, usually a little bit less than san francisco. $3.71 for the average.

the note here. you're looking at a 70-cent decrease. if you can imagine, if those prices can come down, perhaps we wouldn't have seen this travel this weekend. comparing these prices to last thanksgiving a year ago, they're roughly about the same. now, something to keep in mind if you're a driver out of town by 580 the main escape route from the bay area, there has been a lot of traffic as of late. livermore as shoppers are heading to the new outlet mall. might not be as big a deal today as shoppers could be holding off for black friday. but it could be an issue tomorrow night when the mall opens towards thanksgiving sales. and of course on friday itself. when the mall opened a couple weeks ago, traffic was horrendo horrendous. there's been a little dip as of late. i knew that from personal experience. it's going to be tomorrow if you're going to and from grandma's house. and friday if you're trying to

get around, make your late travel escape. reporting live in the south bay, for "today in the bay." >> israel deputy prime minister is calling a bus explosion in tel aviv an escalation in the conflict with palestinian militants in the gaza strip. it comes as secretary of state clinton tried to help piece together a cease-fire. now some new video and details from overnight. >> we've just gotten word secretary clinton has arrived in cairo and is meeting with egypt's president. she released a statement about that bus blast in tel aviv. she calls it a terrorist attack and says the u.s., quote, strongly condemns it. the explosion rocked this bus as it was traveling by israel's military headquarters. it is still standing but the windows are completely blown out and at least 16 people were hurt. 2 seriously. no one has claimed

responsibility outright but take a look at this, new video into our newsroom showing what palestinian officials are calling a bus blast celebration in gaza. you can see peep enjople enjoyi few treats. israel fired at least 30 rockets overnight and troops are still stationed, ready to target hamas if necessary. >> we're about to go to -- bombs and fire. nobody wants to go -- >> remember, a cease-fire was supposed to happen yesterday. instead on this eighth day of fighting the death toll continues to rise with more than 130 palestinians killed so far, hundreds more hurt. getting back to secretary clinton's meeting with egypt's president, that's happening now. according to a foreign policy expert if egypt doesn't want to step in and take control of hamas, the u.s. can pull the plug on getting any assistance

since we don't actually negotiate with terrorist groups. i'll continue to keep my eye on this fluid situation in the middle east. new this morning, an oakland man found dead after an hours long search and rescue effort. this happened at the old rock quarry in oakland behind the rock ridge shopping center it t. the man's roommate called 911 after he'd been gone for more than an hour. they live in an apartment that overlooked the balcony. the roommate said the man had gone out looking for his cat and never came back. divers from the sheriff's office searching the water until finding that man's body. that happened about 12:00 this morning. the fire department at this time is not releasing the man's name. 5:39. keeping an eye on that forecast today. the rain is heading down. >> it is actually doing both.

good morning. live picture, san jose, looking a little dreary. have no fear, the rain will clear by about 10:00 a.m. today. we'll see spotty activity through 11:00, maybe noon. all the activity is slated to be out of here by the second half of the day into tonight. should be nice and dry across the bay area. this is what we're looking at right now. front still draped across. feeling the brunt of the moisture right now as we head throughout the next couple of hours. these showers will continue to deteriorate. we're looking towards the really good second of that of the day. these showers are going to purify our air quality just in time for the arrival of your family and friends. one of the indications the atmosphere is stabilizing, calm winds. we're expecting winds to pick up at about 3:00 p.m. as the front moves into the four corns region. it's going to race into the bay area. really not impacting the california weather as we head throughout tonight. it's going to clear, not even hitting bakersfield or fresno.

if you're trying to hit fso, we don't have the delays reported just yet. the faa's website down, go figure. one to two-hour delays expected. 50 minutes delays out of oakland with rain in the area and the volume alone. 30 minutes expected out of san jose. currently, we're close to 60 degrees. getting some comfortable temperatures. that's on the way. 5:40. let's get you on your way to work if that's where you're headed. >> a word of caution. because of overnight rains christina talked about, slick conditions here. look at that water kicking up on the windshield. you still have to use windshield wipers likely. we'll look at the north of there. a sig alert is going off. three of your four lanes are blocked. another car got into an accident. word is that the car is kind of wedged underneath that big rig. it's a big distraction for

new this morning, india has executed the lone surviving gunman from the mumbai terror attacks. he was killed by hanging. he and other gunman entered mumbai by a boat nearly four years ago and targeted luxury hotel, a jewish center and the train station. the attack killed 166 people. if you're thinking about getting a flu shot, the fda has approved a new first of its kind seasonal flu vaccine.

using the att network leaked people's e-mail addresses. they went public with that information. the man pictured here and the man from our area were hauled into court. spitler testified against orrinheimer. he was convicted of hacking. he faces five years in prison. two big factors, one is whether orrin heimer actually broke laws. they sent a series of numbers like the kinds that ipad use to see if a publicly accessible att computer would spit back e-mail addresses. they didn't hack into the computer. they tricked it. the defense says there's a difference there. secondly, orrinheimer had in the past threatened to release some kind of information, jon and lau laura, were he convicted, a secret cache of important data and he has been convicted. so far, nothing from him yet. we continue to watch. >> yeah, no doubt, all right, thank you. >> interesting digital world.
